MEMORY REFRESHER

I would like to reprint here an old story from the "Cabbage Rules My Universe" site. This story, tilted "Watch Repairman's Daughter" is important to me. I have been thinking about writing a book for children with my own illustrations for some time now. My blogs helped me realise that my story is interesting enough, and that I would like to tell it and turn it into a book not for children only. My inspiration for this project is the life story of Hans Christian Andersen.

MY FRUIT PIE ART

This is the first fruit pie of 2012. It will be known as

"the Apple Pie of January 2012".

I made this Apple Pie differently-- notice the stripe/ribbon

technique, and also: it is a lighter version of "the apple pie line" -- it was made with only 3 apples! Two McIntoshes plus one Red Delicious!:)

SNOWFLAKES

While in Dunk In Donuts at around 8:56 p.m. on January 2, 2012, I crated this snow design

based on one of the beautiful photographs published in the book by Kenneth Libbrecht: The Little book of Snowflakes. My design, in turn, has been used in the flyer for my  Weekend Youth Drawing Workshop: "Winter" that will take place on January 21.

TEDDY BEARS IN MY ATELIER

This isn't the first bear that was "working" in the art studio on West Oakland Park Boulevard. His name is Xmas Teddy, because he is wearing a red vest with a pocket in red and green pattern. He was originally bought at Publix several years ago during one of the many pre Christmas Holiday shopping trips that I frequently made back then.

AUTUMN HARVEST DRAWING & COLLAGE WITH LEAF IMPRESSIONS

"Landscape with Pumpkin and Apple", 2011; 15x11.5"

9x12" drawing paper attached to cardboard. Pastels were used for the background earth part; leaves and acorns were drawn with HB graphite pencil and enhanced with colored pencils: yellow, orange, purple. Watercolor pencils (with brush and water for the upper part) were used for the sky.

On the horizon line: pumpkin and apple drawn from the cornucopia still life; two leaf impressions in the center pasted with acrylic gel medium -- HB graphite pencil and colored pencils were used here.

Additional impressions of leaves (mainly from live oak tree) were cut out and pasted around the drawing paper to create a complete collage. Yarn and mounting tape were used to create a simple hanging "wire" on the back of the cardboard. I forgot to bring this demo collage to the actual workshop on September 17. It wasn't funny, when I started sweating while looking for it on the workshop table cluttered with art materials and recycled cardboard... I left it at home accidentally... but the one and a half hour class went okay...at least that's what I want to believe:) Thanks for participating! Next workshop will be in October, just in time for Halloween!

The Wondelfulness of Life

I helped this antique bunny from Japan to become "real." His ears are decorated. with what I believe is lamb's ear plant. His story begins in Yotsugi - Tokyo. He was sitting on a shelf in a room on the second floor of the old house, where my husband Hiroshi grew up. One day, in October of 2010 he was noticed and taken outside, where he was given a chance to experience the neighborhood, then different parts of Tokyo, then different parts of Japan, and then different parts of the world....
